Papermaking and You! Transforming Plants
Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill
July 21–25; 9am–12pm
Experience new ways of manipulating plant fibers, both familiar and foreign. We will explore some fabulous plants and their amazing abilities for papermaking, sculptures, prints, books and more. Codium seaweed, corn, iris, phragmites, mulberry and flax—all have distinctive, fascinating fiber for making gorgeous handmade paper. Have fun learning papermaking from historical and contemporary perspectives, with traditional tools and innovative ones like hula hoops and dumpling steamers. We'll cook fibers, beat and/or blend them, pull or pour sheets and turn them into fascinating art forms to take home. No prior papermaking or art experience is necessary. Be prepared to get wet, have fun and make great stuff!

Paper Unbound: Connecting Fibers
Provincetown Art Association & Museum
September 10–12
10am–1pm; $250 non-member price
Making paper from plants is an extraordinary experience! In this workshop you will learn the process from harvesting plant fiber, to drying beautiful sheets of unique handmade papers. The focus of this workshop will be the expressive nature of handmade paper and some of the ways it can be used in your art. Exploring particular fibers for their color and texture you will create distinctive, personal handmade sheets for use as a substrate, or as complete 2d or 3d art works, you decide. Some of the fibers we will use may be from your kitchen or garden, Iris leaf, onion skin, phragmites, corn husks, abaca and kozo. Bring your fabrics, threads, fibers, old prints or ?? to use as inclusions in this fun, experimental workshop. Exploring inclusions, pulp painting, shapes and textures your papers will express different concepts, whether mapping memories and exploring place or intuitive pathways on this journey of being human.
